I went down to L.A. to see Richard Colman’s show at New Image called “Keep Out The Light”. I had helped him with the sculpture project and decided to stay for the week. I figured since I was down there I should interview my buddy Adam Flores for his upcoming show “From There to Here” at Gallery Heist in SF. We stopped by Mark Whalen’s (Kill Pixie) studio in Korea Town and drove down to Laguna to check out the beginning of Mike Shine’s installation at the Laguna Art Museum and did the interview on the beach.

What’s this next show all about?

-

I really wanted to focus on change over time and how it occupies the environment around us. I’m continuing to analyze my surroundings, situations, and traditions to produce my current aesthetic.

-

Mr. Flowers' studio

-

What mediums do you use in your pieces?

-

I mostly use gouache, acrylic, and ink on paper pasted on wood panels

-

gouache

-

I noticed that you are really pushing the saturation in your colors and your compositions and ideas are much more central this time around. Where are you headed with this?

-

I’ve been exploring the mediums and technique for this show. I felt like this was a good time for me to push experimentation in my style and see where it takes me.

-

detail shot

-

I see your still doing the Christmas trees. WTF?

-

A lot of my work has to do with tradition, religious beliefs, and morality. The Christmas tree embodies all of these things.

-

Yeah I can see that. It’s like when Christmas comes around everyone tries their hardest to be good and give to one another and when it ends you throw it all in the trash until next year.

-

Right, just like a Christmas tree.

-

The Railroad tracks are a new element. Have you been train hopping?

-

Well I just moved back to L.A. about 7 months ago and the tracks represent the paths that we take as human beings. There’s a lot of bumps in the road and sometimes your train gets derailed and it takes a while to get it back on the tracks running again.

-

the big guy

-

We met in San Francisco almost 4 1/2 years ago. It was hard to see you leave. Why back to L.A.?

-

I was starting to suffocate in that city. I needed room to breathe and stretch my legs. Also, if you listen right now you can hear birds chirping instead of sirens blaring. It’s a nice change of scenery.

-

in true form

Have you got any more tattoos? Not that you have any more room to get them.

-

No, tattoos hurt when you’re sober. hahaha.

-

no bitchin'

-

What’s the next step for Adam Flores other than taking a dump after we ate those insane bacon cheeseburgers from Johnny Rockets?

-

I’m trying to integrate back into the city of Los Angeles. I really want to start showing locally here. I feel like there is a lot of talent and a supportive community here and I just want to be involved. I’m trying to mature in my skillset and mindset and new people and places are going to help me get there.

-

Any artists that you are currently looking at or inspired by?

-

I hate that question because everyday I go on the internet or go outside and I’m inspired by something. I really just enjoy seeing artists who are progressive in their style and consistent in their work ethic.

-

a little somethin'

The EAC went to the San Francisco Art Institute this past Saturday for the release party of the first issue of the San Francisco Arts Quarterly.

San Francisco Arts Quarterly SFAQ MANIFESTO

The mission of the San Francisco Arts Quarterly is to provide the growing arts community of San Francisco with a free publication aimed at enabling galleries, artists, collectors, and the general public to connect and network, facilitating the expansion and flourishing of San Francisco’s art driven economy. SFAQ is a newspaper and calendar that presents the public with a quarterly update on art community events and offer insight into the current and future state of a variety of arts throughout the city.

Jeannine Przyblyski, the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, lead the panel discussion for the night. The discussion ranged from real estate, advertising, collectors, to the purpose of the individual artist within the community. Overall, the discussion was interesting, but felt like more of a contemplation on the state of the arts in the marketplace and its place in the city than it did on the purpose of the SFAQ. It wasn’t a bad thing I just wish there was more discussion on the plans of the SFAQ and what the creators future endeavors were to help facilitate the constantly growing arts community in San Francisco. We’re all very excited to see this publication grow and become a major source for San Franciscans to access what’s happening in the city around them.
